Vintage Telephone Dialer! Blue Moon Bakelite Sterling Silver Monogrammed "S"

Thanks to a friendly and informative eBayer, I now know that this item is a telephone dialer from the days of rotary telephones!  I can see it now!  It is oval and measures 3-1/4" long and 5/8" by 3/8" (15.2mm x 10.5mm) at the wide end.
Picked this item up at an estate sale many years ago and have never been able to find out what it is.  Is it something in itself?  Or, did it come off of something?  A handle of some kind, maybe?  It’s Bakelite and sterling silver (except for the little thing on the end - it’s steel).
The Bakelite is a beautiful translucent blue when shining a light through it.  When shining a bright light on it, the blue stands out; otherwise, it just looks dark greenish with marbling.  The “S” monogram plate is marked sterling.  I assume the ball on the end is also sterling.
Condition: Very good.  Clean and from a smoke-free environment.
